5 Must Watch Women-Centric Short Films

The bygone year on screen has been the one that belonged to women, and the year we’ve set in only seems to top the trend. Films like Padmavat, Hichki, Pari, Raazi definitely proved that it is women who are taking the front seat at the box office. Starting the new year on a powerful note is Khoj, a short film that premiered this weekend on ZEE5.

The emotional scale depth of the movie inspired me to share a list of 5 must watch women-centric short films for cinephiles like me. Read on…

1. Khoj

Khoj, a ZEE5 original definitely had to top the list. Starring Zara Khan, directed and written by Kajri Babbar, this short film tells the tale of a betrayed Gurpreet or Gurri as her loved ones address her, who two days into her wedding, finds herself abandoned by her NRI husband. I’m sure we’ve all known of such unfortunate and commonly occurring incidents across India. However, Gurri decides to matters in her hands and goes on a “Khoj”(Search) to find her husband with a fiery confrontation.

2. Lala Begum

When you imagine a family property dispute on screen, it’s often the run of the mill- two brothers after the family wealth picture that comes to your mind. Lala Begum, a short film featuring Marina Khan, Sonia Rehman and Humayun Saeed decides to ditch the cliché and depicts the estranged relationship of two sisters, Meher and Seher, cross paths after decades over a divided opinion towards their ancestral home. What exactly brings them to this point in life? That’s for you to discover when you watch this highly acclaimed short movie on ZEE5.

3. Juice 

In case you haven’t watched this one already, Juice by Neeraj Ghaywan featuring Shefali Shah as Manju Singh is a brilliant example of everyday adversities faced by a homemaker who is expected to follow uncertain unsaid “rules.” But what happens when the Singhs decide to host a gathering on a particularly warm evening? A glass of juice and silences bring in the needful intervention to the table!

4. Mehram

Following the journey of Aamna played by veteran actor Farida Jalal, Mehram (A male blood relative) sheds light on her struggle (Symbolic of women at large) to go to Haji as a woman. Despite endless obstacles, she refuses to give up. Highly acclaimed at various film festivals, the film is a must-watch for every woman out there, irrespective of religion.

5. The Day After Everyday

What happens when Anurag Kashyap’s dark yet brilliant film making style meets Radhika Apte’s versatility? A product of resonance is created! The Day after every day is exactly that short film that uses some subtle and some not so subtle aspects to highlight a major menace in our society – eve-teasing. This immersive film piques your interest furthermore when women decide enough is enough, giving up on being damsels of distress, and become the knights of their own battle!

  3. Out of these I’ve seen Juice and loved it. Women-centric films are interesting to watch since they portray women characters in a different light. Will catch these on Zee 5.

  7. Zee5 is an amazing app for movies. They have good collection of movies. Haven’t watched these short films but I’m definitely going to watch them on zee5
